![]() ![]() I love pommes anna and these were delicious. The venison was perfectly cooked, medium rare and the presentation of this dish was well executed. ![]() Even Duskie made her rounds, stopping by tables, pouring patrons wines. Like Danko, there is a true team spirit exhibited - wait staff circulate the dining room and check in with different tables, they are not just assigned to a certain area and everyone who spoke to us was genuinely warm and friendly. Hubby described it as, “ Gary Danko – of Sonoma County.” Danko being our favorite restaurant in the City. Before I describe the food let me again tell you that the service we received was extraordinary. Next, Juniper Crusted Venison ($29****) with celery root pommes anna and cranberry salsa for me and J.B.’s Balsamic Pork Shoulder ($19.95****) with melting onions and mashed potatoes for hubby. The Crab Salad and Tobiko was excellent with a healthy portion of crab, too. ![]() The Dates in Bacon was like eating candy first! 10 more please! Fantastic flavor combo of a roasted date with bacon wrapped around it. “Dates Wrapped in Bacon” ($2.25 ea ****) caught my hubby’s eye for a starter and I ordered the “Crab Salad on Endive with Tobiko“($15****). House-made breads of pumpernickel and corn muffins arrived while we scanned our menus. The wait staff was very helpful with the menu items and cheerful. The dining room is long and a bit narrow, so be prepared to sit close to nearby tables. We went for dinner on a cold winter night and were immediately welcomed upon arrival and shown to a charming table near a window. But, if you suffer from claustrophobia, you might object to the rather low ceilings. Let’s just say the interior is much warmer inside than out. Set back from the road, it looks like a former chicken coop! Indeed, it was in a former life. Oh yeah, they own and operate Bovolo in Healdsburg too. ![]() They also produce their own wine with Thomas George Estates: Black Pig Pinot, Blanc Pig and Pink Pig that is highlighted at their restaurants. Together, they were crowned “King & Queen of Porc” at the Grand Cochon at Aspen Food & Wine, 2011. The owner chefs raise their own pigs and cure their meat, making salumi and sausages. Although I would make a bet anytime you go you will have some mighty tasty food. Best to check in with them to see what’s cookin’. With a menu that truly changes with the seasons, it’s hard to keep up with Duskie Estes and John Stewart, the husband and wife chefs of this eclectic establishment. Overall, Zazu Kitchen + Farm is what I imagine all farm-to-table restaurants strive to be, and rightfully so.Parking lot / kids okay / wine country casual The bubbles selection is generous and they have an impressive list of wines offered in half-bottles. The homemade pizzas are the best I’ve had in Northern California and perfect for two people to share.Īlong with the delectable menu, Zazu’s full bar features porcine themed cocktails such as the “black pig whiskey sour.” The wine and beer list has been handpicked by an excellent palette, and offers a variety of local boutique wines and beers as well as some food-friendly wines from Italy and France. Items such as bacon, salumi, and gelato are produced on site, while other ingredients come directly from Zazu’s garden. The menu is fun, heavy on pork and fresh veggies, and offers plenty of unique options for brunch, lunch and dinner. The result is an amazing bacon perfectly balanced in salt, sweet and smoke. Estes and Stewart dry-cure the pork with brown sugar for up to 21 days, and then finish it off over applewood smoke for 12 hours. The pigs are heritage breed, free-range, and raised without antibiotics and hormones. Chefs Duskie Estes and John Stewart, creators of the Black Pig Meat Co., start with pork country-raised in the Northwest. Since 2001, Zazu has been a go-to for foodies, especially those with a lust for quality Bacon. Relocated from Santa Rosa, Zazu’s new space is fresh and sunny with a glossy, minimalist design. My favorite stop, aside from Wind Gap’s modish new tasting room, is Zazu Kitchen + Farm. It’s a chic, contemporary warehouse space one can easily spend an afternoon exploring. The Barlow is Sebastopol’s new culinary and art center, featuring several art galleries, wine tasting rooms, coffee roasters, breweries and restaurants. ![]()
